"Walk on... walk on... with hope in your heart...and you'll never walk alone." -  Rodgers/Hammerstein

This Labor Day weekend will mark the 44th Annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. It is expected to draw about 40 million viewers via television broadcasts and an internet simulcast. Last year's telethon brought in over $60,000.000.00 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. These funds are applied to a worldwide program of research, a nationwide network of comprehensive medical and support systems and extensive professional and public education.

As a result of contributions to the MDA, children and adults with muscle diseases benefit directly through services such as: specialized care at more that 200 MDA clinics and more than 35 MDA/ALS centers; free flu vaccines; assistance with obtaining, maintaining and repair of medical equipment, like wheelchairs and leg braces; support groups for individuals and family members; and MDA Summer Camp - a very special place that enables very special kids to be kids.

Every year, new advances are made through research. In 2009 MDA-supported scientists and researchers identified stem cells that develop into specialized muscle repair cells, found a gene-repair strategy (exon skipping) that successfully treated dogs with muscular dystrophy when applied systemically, and completed a pilot trial of gene therapy in people with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy - finding it was not only safe, but showed promise of effectiveness. These are only a few of the many significant breakthroughs made recently. Currently, MDA is funding more than 330 projects worldwide, at a cost of about $38 million.

Of course, much of this has been made possible thanks to the organization's #1 volunteer and supporter: Jerry Lewis. For more than 50 years, Lewis has been directly involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and its efforts to find cures for a host of neuro-muscular diseases, including Duchenne, Friedreich's Ataxia, Myasthenia Gravis, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). In all, there are more than 40 diseases listed under the MDA Program's "umbrella." Despite his own ill health in recent years, Jerry Lewis has continued to work tirelessly in his role as MDA National Chairman. Through his years-long behind-the-scenes work, and especially his annual Labor Day telethons, Lewis has brought the needs of MDA patients and families worldwide attention, and has helped to de-stigmatize the disease.

With its Las Vegas backdrop, constant parade of entertainers (old and new), celebrity appearances and frequent "tote-board" tallies of in-coming donations, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon has become a cultural touch-stone of Americana. No Labor Day Weekend would be complete without it. Despite a successful career as a comedian and actor, Jerry Lewis' true legacy will be the incredible humanitarian work he has done for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the people it serves.
